What is a Cosmos?

History of the Cosmos

The first recorded recipe for a “Cosmopolitan” appears in serial form in 1952, in Gourmet magazine. The drink was created by Helen Pich temptress of the high society scene in New York during the 1950s. According to legend, she named it after the popular Lipstick Cosmopolitan cocktail.

The drink became popularized on television in 1998, when Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) ordered one at miserably at dinner with Mr. Big. As she told her friend Charlotte: “I’m sorry, I have to get this. Somebody stopped me on my way in and said ‘Sex and the City! Oh my God, cosmopolitans!’ Apparently we started something.”

4. Garnish with a slice of lime, if desired, and serve immediately

-1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
-Ice cubes

1. Combine first 4 ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Fill shaker with ice, cover, and shake vigorously until outside of shaker is frosty, about 30 seconds.
2. Strain into a chilled martini glass; garnish with cranberries and lime twist
