Introduction
Discovered in 1960 by a team of astronomers led by Clyde Tombaugh, Pluto is the last known planet in our solar system. Measuring just 2,370 kilometers in diameter, it is only about two-thirds the size of Earth’s moon! Despite its small size, Pluto is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic objects in our solar system. It has a strangely elliptical orbit that takes it closer to the sun than Neptune for 20 years out of every 248 years! And unlike all the other planets, which rotate on their axes in roughly the same plane as their orbit around the sun, Pluto’s axis is tilted more than 60 degrees with respect to its orbital plane. As a result, for half of each Pluto year (equal to 248 Earth years), the sun shines on Pluto’s south pole; for the other half, it shines on its north pole.
