Between June 2015 and June 2016, Professor Will Brooker embarked on a unique research experiment. His project aimed to connect with the life and experiences of David Bowie from the mid-1960s to the present day, through a process of immersion. Brooker adopted Bowie’s key outfits, make-up and hairstyles, his diet and his sleep patterns. He stayed at significant locations from Bowie’s life and career, from Brixton, Beckenham and Bromley to Berlin, Philadelphia, Lausanne and New York. During the year he trained vocally and performed with a Bowie tribute band, The Thin White Duke.
Brooker’s research project attracted worldwide media attention. It resulted in the book, Forever Stardust (I B Tauris, 2017), an academic study of Bowie’s themes, concerns and development as an artist across his career. Brooker’s year of immersion was also captured in the documentary Being Bowie, compiled from Super-8 cine film, still photography, television interviews, gig footage and video diaries.
Forever Stardust is available here.
Being Bowie is published as a video essay in NECSUS, the European Journal of Media Studies.
